Chaz Bono may sue National Enquirer over story claiming he will die in four years
Chaz Bono Chaz Bono is demanding that the National Enquirer retract their claim that he will be dead in a just few years.
The tabloid’s latest cover story, “Chaz Bono: Only 4 Years to Live,” alleges that the “Dancing With the Stars” contestant may be put in an early grave because he underwent gender reassignment surgery. It claims that “obesity, testosterone supplements, past depression and high suicide rates among transgendered people” increase Bono’s chances of dying.
Bono’s lawyer sent a cease-and-desist letter to the Enquirer, asking the tabloid to publish an apology and retraction within 24 hours and never makes similar claims against Bono again. If the Enquirer refuses, Bono may pursue legal recourse
His lawyer calls the article “outrageous, false, fabricated and highly defamatory” and “crafted for the malicious purpose of discriminating against our client’s gender and sexual orientation.”
The Enquirer cites Patrick Wanis, a self-proclaimed human behavior expert and celebrity life coach, as a transgender specialist. “Your depiction of him as medical doctor specializing in transgender health issues are highly misleading and blatantly false,” the letter states. Gossip Cop points out that Wanis also predicted the deaths of Kirstie Alley, Whitney Houston and Dr. Phil for the Enquirer. All three are still alive, last we checked.
A lawyer from American Media, Inc., the company that owns the tabloid, has not responded to a request for comment.
